A community partnership will bring affordable high-speed Internet access to much of Switzerland County. The Switzerland County Economic Development Commission has partnered with the City of Rising Sun, The Patriot Water Company and K95.5 FM radio to make the service available. The new service will cover north-central Switzerland County.
"If you live within 10 aerial miles of Center Square or Quercus Grove, it is worth the free test to see if you are within the service range," said Trey Clifton of Rising Sun Municipal Utilities. Rising Sun Municipal Utilities began providing broadband service to the city of Rising Sun in 2005. Since that time, it has grown to cover most of Ohio County.
The Switzerland County Economic Development Commission provided equipment to allow Rising Sun's wireless Internet service to be carried into Switzerland County. Tower space to mount the equipment was provided by The Patriot Water Company in Quercus Grove and K95.9 FM radio in Center Square.
"It took a lot of people working together to make this project possible," said Trey Clifton. "We could not have made this service available without our partners.”
Locally, the development of the system was spearheaded by Jon Bond as part of the overall economic development plan for Switzerland County. Having wide spread and convenient Internet access is a vital component to attracting business and industry to the area — with local residents also getting the benefit of having access to the system.
Switzerland County's 2004 Economic Development Strategy called for the community to develop a strategy to deploy affordable highspeed Internet to as much of Switzerland County as possible. In May of 2005, a Broadband Advisory Group was formed to develop the strategy. Its research determined that over 75 percent of Switzerland County had no high speed Internet access.
"Our first goal is to reverse that number, having high-speed Internet available to at least 75-percent of Switzerland County residents." said Judy Firth, President of the Switzerland County Economic Development Commission. "We believe we can achieve this by the end of 2008."
Residents who are interested in the service and live in the service area can contact Ohio River Valley Communications (ORVComm) at 812-438-3616; or visit ORVComm's website at www.orvcomm.com for more information.
