MILPITAS, CA (November 4, 2008) - Aperto® Networks, builder of the world's most versatile carrier-grade and cost-effective WiMAX Forum Certified™ base stations and subscriber units, announced today that Zing, a next generation wireless service provider based in Detroit, MI, has chosen Aperto's award-winning PacketMAX® solution for a multi-state WiMAX network. Initially operating in the lightly-licensed 3.65 GHz frequency and eventually in the license-exempt 5.8 GHz frequency, the network will provide wireless broadband voice and data services in five states including Michigan, Washington, Colorado, Florida, and Tennessee. The Michigan and Washington markets will go live before the end of the year with the others soon after. Zing will expand the network later next year to include California and Texas. "This win is another testament to Aperto's WiMAX market leadership in the 3.65 GHz and 5 GHz bands," said Manish Gupta, Vice President of Marketing & Alliances for Aperto Networks and WiMAX Forum Board Member. "The deployment will cover diverse geographies, urban and suburban areas, and even include multiple hops over mountains and bodies of water. It really showcases the versatility and performance of our PacketMAX technology when used in non line-of-sight (NLOS) high-interference environments." Zing's WiMAX network will provide wireless broadband voice and data services to a variety of customers including business, enterprise, SOHO, government, municipal, and education. The network will deploy two different Aperto base stations: the PacketMAX 5000 and PacketMAX 3000. It will also include hundreds of subscriber units, including the PacketMAX 120 and PacketMAX 320. When completed, the network will support symmetrical and asymmetrical connections with speeds up to 10 MB. "We did our homework on this one and no other wireless product came close to PacketMAX in terms of meeting our unique needs," said Tolly Marcus, President and CEO of Zing. "Our goal is to provide 100% coverage in all markets, and you just can't do this if you rely only on LOS connectivity in licensed frequencies. PacketMAX is known for its robustness in NLOS conditions, carrier-grade quality-of-service (QoS), and rich networking features. It's also the only carrier-grade WiMAX solution on the market with automatic repeat request (ARQ), a must-have to control errors in data transmission." "Beyond pure performance, PacketMAX also proved to be the most cost-effective solution on the market," added Dominic Serra, CFO of Zing. "Aperto allows Zing to affordably offer next generation broadband services with the same reliability and performance of traditional TDM wireline companies. We expect very fast ROI." The PacketMAX family of products delivers the critical elements required to extend wireless broadband services to a wide range of users—ranging from governments, large enterprises and public-sector organizations to multi-tenet buildings and residences—using a single, standards-based platform. PacketMAX also supports the widest range of licensed and licensed-exempt frequencies in the world, including the 2.5 GHz, 3.3 GHz, 3.5 GHz, 4.9 GHz, 5.1 GHz, 5.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands.
